Is this a sign of Abuse?

I've been dating this guy for about a year.He drinks alot he is a part of a gang but just recently he started putting his hands on me.He was choking me pulling my hair socking me in my arms.He says he loves me the reason he hit me is because he's having family problems I never did anything to him for him to hit me...He promises to never do it again should I leave him????
