Can you wear rubber bands (braces) when sleeping?

Hey I just got my rubber bands on today and my orthodontist told me I have to take them out when brushing and eating but he didn't say anything about sleeping. Can I wear them when sleeping or is it bad? I'm confused because I don't want to choke on them or something haha.
