Why are so many intellectuals pretentious?

I hate to bring up the stereotypical republican view of ivory tower intellectuals, but I seldom meet anyone who's intelligent, but kind and humble these days. Even on the Internet, some of the most intelligent commenters and writers seem to be out to "beat" other people rather than explain and help people to benefit humankind.
