Body language: guy friend held my neck while walking?

My best guy friend and I were walking and he put his hand around my neck, almost like steering me. It was like choking someone from behind without actually choking them. Lol. It was like this firm but gentle grasp around my neck. I have noticed my father does this constantly to me as well. Can someone please explain to me what this means? Does it show protection?
